Intro - Alkalinity & Health

Our health is determined by our body's pH level,

a measure of how much oxygen is in our cells.

Proper pH balance (alkalinity) is critical for good health. The pH scale is 0-14 where 7 is neutral, below 7 is acidic, and above 7 is alkaline. The body must maintain an acid-alkaline pH that is slightly alkaline with a blood pH of about 7.35. If this balance is disturbed and the pH drops below 7, acid wastes begin to build up and health problems develop. We experience symptoms like low energy, weight gain, poor digestion, brain fog, skin problems, aches and pain, etc. In this acidic (low oxygen) environment, the immune system is weakened, microorganisms like harmful bacteria and viruses that cause infectious diseases thrive, fungus (candida) and mucus develop, and vital minerals are borrowed from tissues, bones, and vital organs to neutralize the acid. This leads to chronic inflammation, the root cause of  almost all diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, alzheimers, arthritis, depression, digestive disorders, etc. Inflammation is the immune system's natural response to all types of stressors (physical injury, dietary, mental/emotional, chemical, and environmental).

Restoring the body's alkalinity oxygenates it, strengthens the immune system, destroys any harmful microorganisms and fungus, and aids in detoxification, thus returning the body to its natural healthy condition.

You can test your pH by purchasing pH strips at a local health foods store or pharmacy and measure your saliva or urine pH. You compare the colors on the test strip to the chart that comes with the kit. The pH fluctuates throughout the day, but the normal saliva pH range is between 6.0 and 8.0 (where 6.8-7.2 is best). Cancer patients, for example, almost always have a saliva pH of 4-5.5 (strongly acidic). Test your saliva pH daily or at least two days a week. The saliva pH range is best kept over 6.0 when healthy (where 6.8-7.2 is best), and over 7.0 when sick. Fill your mouth with saliva, swallow it, then spit and test your saliva. The best time to test your pH is one hour before a meal or two hours after a meal (this is helpful because you can also observe the meal's impact on your pH). 

It's vital, therefore, to eat a mainly alkaline diet and to limit acidic foods and drinks. A healthy diet consists mostly of alkaline foods like sea vegetables, land vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, sprouts, herbs, spices, fermented foods, and of limited amounts of acidic foods like meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, legumes, and grains. Unhealthy foods and poor eating habits have a negative effect on alkalinity. You'll learn more about this in Diet.

It's also important to reduce exposure to internal stressors (chemical, mental, and emotional) which also acidify the body. Minimize exposure to chemical stressors (chemicals in the food, water, and products we use), and detox regularly because all chemicals acidify the body. Minimize mental and emotional stress because negative thoughts (like anxiety) and negative emotions (like anger) acidify the body when acidic stress hormones like cortisol are produced. Also, minimize exposure to external environmental stressors like polluted air, noise, lighting, and electromagnetic radiation (EMFs) which acidify the body when the hormonal system is disrupted and acidic stress hormones are also produced. Thus, diet and lifestyle affect our body's pH balance (alkalinity),

which determines our overall health.
